Y-CAP CAR SHOW
The car show is a fundraiser benefiting DeSoto County Y-CAP, which
means YMCA Community Action Program. The program helps "AT Risk" youth
by Redirecting Youth Behavior, Teaching Values and Rebuilding Families.
I created the open class car show last year to help supplement dwindling
funds. The idea came after I realized there are many classic car
enthusiasts in Hernando, but there were no local cruise ins or car shows
except those in other parts of Desoto County. To help yield more
success, I attached the event to the Hernando Chamber's festival. Last
year we had seventy two registered cars as a first time event with a
total of about eighty six cars present. This year, due to scheduling
conflicts for the Hernando Water Tower Festival, our numbers dropped
because we were forced to compete with the Tunica show. With only
twenty seven cars present, I was still happy because the event is young
and developing. Fortunately, Guaranty Bank and Angie Hick, Executive
Director of The Hernando Chamber donated money that allowed us to see a
decent profit in light of the lost participants.
Much of my learning curve comes from the many gracious participants who
provide constructive feedback that has led me to add dash plaques,
adjust the registration process, finesse judging and make the car show
more a part of the festival. Our awards are hand made by some of the
program kids from recycled car parts. Call it Green. Next year I hope
to have a hundred cars and continue to add award categories.
